About Brooke:
The Story of RunningBrooke

Brooke Sydnor Curran is a Alexandria, VA mom and now-marathoner, who 15 years ago, ran 10 miles per week just to get out of the house. When 9/11 happened, Brooke realized the precariousness of life and decided to start her ‘bucket list’. Running a marathon seemed like a logical place to start. So mad after a sub-par first-time effort, Brooke primarily focused on speed and then made it her goal to place and/or win her Age Group in every run she raced. In time however, her spirit was left wanting more. So in May of 2009, she founded RunningBrooke and personally committed to running a marathon on each of the 7 continents, in each of the 50 states, and the 5 world marathon majors (DC too) -- a marathon a month -- to encourage others to get involved and make a difference too. She pays for 100% of her travel expenses and fees so 100% of donations funds proven Northern Virginia charities.

The RunningBrooke Community has grown and now engages and empowers citizens near and far to "lace up its shoes" for at-risk kids in Northern Virginia. We do this through business sponsorships, individual donations, and community running events. In turn, we make grants ($190,000.00 so far!) to proven local charities.

Brooke has skin in the game.

Phase 1: A marathon on each of the 7 continents, in each of the 50 states, the 5 world marathon majors -- a marathon a month, donating all proceeds -- Done in October, 2013.

Phase 2: 100 marathons and one million dollars for at-risk NoVA kids.

  • FOUNDER, THE RUNNINGBROOKE FUND, ALEXANDRIA, VA — MAY 2009-PRESENT
I have paired my passions for distance running and community service, and established The RunningBrooke Fund in May of 2009. This fund provides 5 vital Alexandria, VA-based charities critical funds to serve at-risk children and families. By inspiring others (to give) with my personal commitment (running a marathon on every continent, in each of the 50 states, and the world marathon majors -- a marathon a month), training runners and hosting various fund-raising events (community theatre nights, social, and shopping events), I have raised and donated over $150,000. This money sends 4-year-olds to preschool, gives books to children who otherwise would have none, lifts homeless families to self sufficiency, provides healthful after-school snacks for students living in shelters, and gives the gift of self-esteem (while training for a 5k running event) to elementary school girls.
